This work covers topics ranging from fundamental studies of solubilization to practical technological applications of the phenomenon. It reviews the solubilization of organic materials into surfactant aggregates, including micelles, vesicles and admicelles. The book also details methods of measuring solubilization that utilize both classical and newer instrumental techniques. It is intended for physical, surface, colloid and surfactant chemists; chemical, environmental and civil engineers; and upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in these disciplines.

A general introduction to surfactants, surface activity, andsurfactant applications Important advances in the tools available for studying the activityof surfactants has significantly increased scientific understandingof interfaces at the molecular level. However, there is still muchto be learned. In this Third Edition of the successful classic, author and expert Drew Myers combines the latest informationavailable in the field of surfactants with his original, accessibletext on the subject. Now fully updated to reflect recent developments in working withsurfactants in both model and practical systems, the Third Editionof Surfactant Science and Technology provides a solid introductionto the field of surfactant science. Written especially forbeginners and nonspecialists who would like a practical but notnecessarily comprehensive knowledge of the field, this clear, cogent text conveys the most fundamental and useful concepts ofsurfactant action and application. New chapters bring readers up todate on current biological and medical applications of surfactants,as well as applications in food science, cosmetics, and otherareas. In addition to new chapters, Surfactant Science and Technologyincludes illustrative problems at the end of each chapter. Theseproblems explain concepts discussed and stimulate imaginativesolutions on the part of the reader. A helpful bibliography ofsupplementary resources for readers who desire more detail has alsobeen included. Surfactant Science and Technology, Third Edition is an invaluableresource for surface and polymer chemists, chemical and industrialengineers, and a wide range of chemistry students.

Surface Active Agents (surfactants) are vital components in biological systems, form key ingredients in consumer products and play an important role in many industrial processes. For example, cell membranes owe their structure to the aggregation of surfactants known as lipids which form a major component of the membrane. Other natural surfactants occur in the digestive system, in the lungs, and even in such substances as crude oil. Man-made surfactants are used in a wide range of domestic and industrial products and processes. In addition to detergents and personal care products, surfactants have found uses in almost every branch of the chemical industry as well as in several other industries. These include dyestuffs, fibres, mineral process ing, oil field chemicals, paints, pesticides, pharmaceuticals and plastics. Surfactants are versatile materials which are manufactured in a huge variety of forms to suit all of these applications. As a result of their importance, the technical literature on all aspects of surfactant behaviour is now very extensive. Surprisingly, however, the treatment in textbooks has been somewhat fragmented, often in the form of conference proceedings or edited, multi-authored works, both lacking in continuity.

This work describes the solubility, solution properties, thermodynamics, miscibility, solubilization, mesomorphic character and other physical properties of mixed surfactant systems - presenting both theoretical analysis and a wide range of practical applications. Equations clarify complex and abstract constructs.;The book also: treats mixed critical micelle concentrations, surface tension, flotation and absorption in terms of thermodynamic models; explores the miscibility of fluorocarbon and hydrocarbon surfactants in the micelles, covering micelle formation, liquid-liquid solubility and thermodynamics of mixed micellization; determines the mean aggregation number by steady-state quenching methods, and analyzes the composition of mixed micelles; discusses the mechanisms and experimental studies of adsorption from mixed surfactant systems; examines surface activity of surfactant mixtures, mixing phenomena and liquid crystal phase behaviour; and reviews means of investigation that use ion-specific electrodes, light scattering, and NMR and flourescence probing.

Given the enormous interest in surface phenomena in areas ranging from materials science to applications in life science, this volume is a very timely addition to the literature. Emphasis is on surfactants mediating interfacial and molecular aggregation phenomena, and the following topics are reviewed in particular: dissolution rates, equilibrium adsorption, mixing rules, and spreading on a solid surface of surfactants, as well as the role of surfactants in mediating a range of processes, such as the fabrication of various nanomaterials. Written and edited by leading experts, this volume is dedicated to Professor Dinesh O. Shah, one of the pioneers in this field.
