Originally a Unesco project, this annotate bibliography results from more than 4,600 requests to media scholars and researchers for research reports, publications, and other information relating to violence and terrorism. Although there is an international cast to the materials, most are from the U.S. Even though violence and terrorism permeate our myths and legends, there is increasing concern with their effect on viewers. This bibliography is particularly timely, with entries through spring 1987. The sections of the work (mass media content, mass media effects, pornography and the media, terrorism and the media) give a better idea of the work's scope than does the title. "Choice" T]he annotations are clearly written, succinctly descriptive of the original work's research with test groups, and evaluative of research results. "Reference Books Bulletin" This bibliography focuses on research and scholarly works relating to violence and terror. Consisting primarily of articles published in scholarly journals and books, this comprehensive work examines major topics such as violence and mass media content, violence and mass media effects, terrorism and the mass media, and pornography. Also included are articles from popular journals, reports published by the United States and other governments, conference papers, and dissertations. Each entry consists of the bibliographic citation and a short abstract; many of the sources include studies from other countries where relevant research has been conducted. The compilers' introduction provides a clear definition of violence and terrorism as they are dealt with in this volume and offers an interesting overview of various aspects of the subject.

Alcohol problems among Native Americans are severe and widespread. Statistics report that the rate of alcohol-related deaths is about eight times greater for Native Americans than for the U.S. population as a whole. This bibliography identifies the problems of alcoholism and alcohol abuse among Native American youth as a severe mental and physical health issue that deserves closer study, and it brings together in one volume most of what is known about the subject to date. The increasing amount of research that has appeared in recent years has created the need for a comprehensive reference focusing not only on anthropological and sociological concerns, but on questions more specifically relevant to Native Americans, such as child abuse and neglect, foster homes, school problems, dropouts, peer relation effects, family modeling response, fetal alcohol syndrome, developmental factors, and, most importantly, social deprivation. The authors maintain that the emerging literature on Native American youth's alcoholism is multidisciplinary in nature, suggesting that the subject in general has taken on greater significance in the social framework of this country. Native American Youth and Alcohol makes a valuable contribution by emphasizing the current publications on Indian youth and alcohol in an accessible format that offers a broad spectrum of opinion and analysis. This timely work will be read by professionals in the human services field and by a variety of researchers, practitioners, and those who are currently engaged in health promotion and disease prevention activities.

This bibliography pulls together a scattered literature of articles, monographs, and court cases to create a complete picture of the treatment of the homosexual in contemporary society. The work is organized by types of discrimination such as military, child custody, and religious, making searching of its contents easy for both researchers and the general audience. A pioneering work, The Homosexual and Society opens up a new subfield of research in the social sciences which has been neglected and merits wider consideration.

The crisis in Central America and the Caribbean has led to an increased number of books, articles, and studies on Latin America. The role of the United States in Latin America, both in history and at the present time, is receiving new attention and examination. Renewed interest in the foreign policies of Latin American countries and in democracy and redemocratization is reflected in the literature. This comprehensive reference is intended as a sequel to two previously published works: Latin America, 1967-1979: Social Science Information Sources and Latin America, 1979-1983: A Social Science Bibliography. It contains titles of books, monographs, articles, and chapters that have been published through 1987, and it provides up-to-date and in-depth listings of available materials on Latin America. This expansive work will prove especially useful for university and college faculties as well as for librarians who provide guidance to students researching Latin America.
