One day, a baby seahorse is born, turning and tumbling as he floats through ocean currents alongside his three hundred brothers and sisters. Like a tiny, mythical dragon, the seahorse is a fascinating creature: he changes color to fit in with the surroundings of his spectacular coral reef and sea grass surroundings; his lizard-like eyes can look in two directions at once; and when he has grown, he—not the female—will give birth to the next batch of whirling seahorses. Jennifer Keats Curtis's evocative language and Chad Wallace's shimmering illustrations tell the story of the seahorse's amazing life beneath the waves.

Marly's had enough of the cramped little rundown flat and wounded grey street where she lives with her fiance, David. If they could just move away, escape to a rose-covered cottage by the sea, she's sure she would get better and everything would be alright... Seahorses are real is a powerful debut novel of love and damage. Zillah Bethell tells the haunting tale of a relationship warped by depression, at once tender and destructive, where violence is not only perpetrated by men and love is not necessarily enough.

Scottish poet Hazel Frew's first collection of poems offers tales of families, of growing up, and of the world around us, seen with uncommonly fresh eyes. ""I like my poems to get to the point, be direct, but in an unusual, indirect way. Glimpses of dreams, lovers, sickness, grief-strange portraits and incidents. Succinct, neat, precise. Cutting things away, shearing images, keeping words to a minimum-hopefully elaborate, sharp, funny and poignant-with the aloud sound of the poem intrinsic to the form. The resulting poems incisive, honest and humorous. My first collection is a camera of twelve years, cataloguing quirky characters and events, family, relationships, death, the world, comets and beyond." (Hazel Frew)

The Impact of a Seahorse's Size on the Mating Process. Is There a Significant Difference Between the Heights of Brooding Male Hippocampus Reidi as Compared to Non-Brooding Males?

Scientific Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Biology - Behaviour, grade: 94, , course: Biology, language: English, abstract: Unlike other species, male seahorses are the carriers of their offspring. The reason for that remains still unknown, two theories are widespread: first, that since creating life takes quite a bit of energy, having the male seahorse carry the babies splits the energy load between the two parents. A second reason could be that this allows seahorses to reproduce more quickly, since it gives the female seahorse more time to make more eggs The question that is pursued in this thesis is: Does size give male Hippocampus reidi a significant advantage in finding mates? In the wild, size can be quite important. Larger male seahorses can intimidate smaller seahorses, especially when competing for a mate. A bigger sized seahorse can likely defend its territory and offspring better than a smaller sized seahorse, thus becoming more appealing for female seahorses. In addition, a larger seahorse could signify an older, more experienced and capable seahorse. The assumption is, that there indeed is a significant difference between the heights of brooding male and non-brooding male Hippocampus reidi. (The term "brooding male" refers to male Hippocampus reidi which were observed to having a bulging brooding pouch containing seahorse eggs.) The measuring of seahorse height is a quick process, and has not been believed to do any harm for years. A statistical analysis using an unpaired t-test will be made to test the initial hypothesis.

Seahorses are extraordinary creatures. They swim upright and spend days in dancing courtship. They are small, shy and have heads shaped like miniature ponies. And the male carries the female’s eggs in his pouch and ‘births’ the young. Found worldwide, they are sensitive to environmental disruption and are an obvious flagship group for conservation. Seahorses unveils every species, including the seadragons and pipefish that share the Syngnathidae family. Each of the 47 entries incorporates a photograph and description, so you can admire their beauty as you learn about their ecological importance.
