It's competent people, not paperwork, that make visits safer' - Ian Park, ex-Chairman, Outdoor Education Advisers' Panel 'Every man and woman who is involved in the development or education of young people - however slightly - should be chained to one of the Barns of Bynack and not released until they have read this book cover to cover' - Alan Bantick, wildlife conservationist, lecturer, photographer and guide 'Bob Barton's balanced and well thought out book will help anyone involved with the planning and management of outdoor activities for young people. Bob explores the issues that need to be considered when developing and implementing outdoor policies and procedures, in an interesting and thought provoking style, drawing on his wealth of outdoor experience' - Peter Westgarth, Chief Executive, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award 'This book fills a gap which sorely needed filling. The safety versus adventure debate is discussed in a thoroughly refreshing way and should inspire a new generation of teachers and youth workers to take their charges into the great outdoors. The book should be required reading for every Health and Safety Officer throughout the land to improve their understanding of what Adventure Educators are trying to achieve' - Doug Jones, County Officer, Outdoor Education and Adventure Activities, Bedfordshire County Council 'A distillation of years of experience in adventure activities and an essential guide to getting the proper balance between adventure and safety' - Nick Barrett, Chief Executive of the Outward Bound Trust Providers of outdoor education must strike the right balance between adventure and security. Kurt Diemberger belongs to an elite mountaineering club. He is one of only two climbers to have made first ascents of two 8,000-metre peaks - Broad Peak and Dhaulagiri. His Broad Peak ascent was the first eight-thousander climbed in alpine style without oxygen. He had climbed the major Alps north faces (the Eiger, Matterhorn and Grandes Jorasses) by 1958 and was awarded the fifth Piolets d'Or lifetime achievement award. But Diemberger's adventures revolve around more than climbing, as Spirits of the Air reveals. Of course, there is plenty of mountaineering - expeditions to Makalu and Everest, America and the Hindu Kush. But there are also rickety aeroplanes which inevitably crash, anacondas to wrestle and bar-room meetings with Reinhold Messner. And there is Diemberger's filmmaking. A pioneering filmmaker, he has shot on the top of Everest and in the Arctic circle, making several mountaineering film firsts and becoming one of the best cameramen of the genre. In Spirits of the Air Diemberger describes his life and adventures after the 1986 K2 disaster, which affected him greatly, and some earlier episodes. He reflects on the contrasts between his life in Europe and the always-beckoning Himalaya, and on family, loves and friendships. Describing his experiences with a tremendous zest for life that is both endearing and compelling, Diemberger creates a very readable and very different mountaineering autobiography.

In 1891 Hugh Thomas Munro published his tables of the Scottish 3,000-foot peaks, and ever since the Reverend A.E. Robertson became the first Munroist (by completing the first ascent of all the mountains listed) there has been an accelerating number of mountaineers seeking to follow in his footsteps. The listing was updated in 1997, to make a total of 284 mountains, and in this stunning book Irvine Butterfield has selected the most evocative photographs to reveal the individual character of each one, with supporting information such as vital statistics. All the photographers' work shown here captures that illusive quality which, simply put, is 'the magic of the Munros.'
