Humans have been making lists for even longer than they've been writing letters. They are the shorthand for what really matters to us: our hopes and aspirations; likes and dislikes; rules for living and loving; records of our memories and reminders of the things we want to do before we die. Just as he did with Letters of Note, Shaun Usher has trawled the world's archives to produce a rich visual anthology that stretches from ancient times to present day. From a to-do list of Leonardo da Vinci's to Charles Darwin on the pros and cons of marriage or Julia Child's list of possible titles for what would later become an American cooking bible, Lists of Note is a constantly surprising A-Z of what makes us human. In its pages you'll find 125 lists with facsimiles or illustrations, including: 1. A shopping list written by two 9th-century Tibetan monks 2. A handwritten list of the BFG's favourite words by Roald Dahl 3. The 19 year-old Isaac Newton's list of the 57 sins he'd already committed 4. Galileo's list of parts needed to build his telescope 5. Einstein's punitive list of conditions imposed on his first wife 6. 29-year-old Marilyn Monroe's inspirational set of New Year's resolutions 7. Martin Luther King's advice for black people starting to use buses 8. Johnny Cash's list of 'things to do today' 9. Michelangelo's illustrated shopping list 10. Advice for 'chick rockers' by Chrissie Hynde And many, many more...

How to Be a Craftivist is a manifesto for quiet activism: how to tackle issues not with shouting and aggression but with gentle protest, using the process of ‘making’ to engage thoughtfully in the issues we are about, to influence and effect change. Sarah Corbett – professional campaigner and founder of the Craftivist Collective – shares her journey from burnt-out activist, tired of marching, confrontation and demonizing opposition, towards a more respectful activism: using craft to contemplate global issues, provoke thought and start conversations rather than arguments; to engage, empower and encourage people on and offline to become part of change in the face of injustice, inequality and prejudice. Interwoven with Sarah’s personal stories of causes fought are ideas and suggestions for every novice craftivist. From how to think about the medium itself, to looking at colour, fonts, size and message, here is inspiration for every detail of your creation. In today’s world it’s easy to feel helpless, but here is a book to initiate debates rather than shouting matches, to enable collaboration in place of confrontation. Gentleness can be a great strength, and quiet action can sometimes speak as powerfully amid the noise as the loudest voice. And if we want a world that is beautiful, kind and fair... shouldn’t our activism be beautiful, kind and fair?

This volume covers the numerous small lists of feasts that occur mainly on stelae and in tombs. A chronological study is presented wherein the major phases of Pharaonic Egypt (Old Kingdom to the Ptolemaic Period) are covered. Questions of dating these inscriptions as well as reasons concerning alterations in the lists form a major part of the discussion. In particular, differences in arrangement of these private celebrations both within a specific time period as well as between eras provide causes for the alterations of religious patterns of a non-royal sort. Calendrical ideas are likewise surveyed although for the most part the aim of this study remains focused upon the religious events themselves.Material of an ancillary nature (including some data from royal inscriptions) will be found only when they provide light upon the private religious practices.

This book challenges current beliefs about God and religion, with particular emphasis upon misconceptions popularized by the Christian religion. The common belief, that a God of "good" is at war with a powerful fallen angel of "evil", wherein God imposes irreconcilable punishment upon those who fail to accept a particular set of dogma as being the only acceptable truth, is shown to be not only false, but in conflict with the very nature of God, and Its inspired teachings. Dawn of Truth begins with an examination of contemporary beliefs about God, offering an alternative view that is capable of satisfying the skeptical and scientific mind. It goes on from there to propose a plan or intention of God that provides a believable explanation for the cause of suffering in the world; revealing the true purpose of religion and philosophy, as they relate to soul development. Perhaps the most controversial subject dealt with in this book, is the multi-dimensionality of soul; describing mankind as an expression or extension of God, rather than as a totally separate entity. Within this paradigm, all that exists is but a manifestation of the One; separate only in its temporary state of illusion or limited perception. In Dawn of Truth, the author draws from his own personal experiences, or ascents into higher states of awareness, to disclose the many truths misunderstood or denied by the world's major religions. The author reveals how all people, regardless of religious affiliation, can apply the universal truths (taught by enlightened masters) to escape their present state of suffering and fear, and move into realms of love, peace and joy. This book outlines a way whereby all who choose, can dissolve their feelings of guilt; experiencing ascension into higher states of awareness through an expansion of love.

A Dictionary of Birds enlists contributions from over 280 ornithologists and other specialists from around the world. Major, authoritative articles cover the field of modern ornithology and related subjects, many of them running to several thousand words. In addition there are articles on all the bird families, almost all of which are illustrated by a representative species. There are also numerous short entries defining special terms, application of names, etc. The total gives a text of over 800,000 words, supported by more than 500 photographs, drawings and diagrams. The photographs have been selected under the guidance of Eric Hosking to illustrate different activities of birds, and Robert Gillmor has assembled a collection of over 200 drawings of birds, almost all of which were specially drawn for the Dictionary. Compiled for the British Ornithologists' Union, this new work is in line of succession from Newton's A Dictionary of Birds of 1896 and Landsborough Thomson's A New Dictionary of Birds published in 1964 (2nd impression 1965) and now long out of print. This new dictionary, encyclopaedic in treatment, is destined to be a major reference in any ornithologist's library; and its editors and contributors, most of whom gave their time and knowledge freely, have earned the thanks and acclaim of users for many years to come. Frances James, President of the American Ornithologists' Union, writes in her preface of "the role the dictionary will play in fostering communications among nations. For students it will serve as an entrance to the present status of the field. For scientists it will serve as a research tool and a bridge between disciplines."
