Broken Silence: A Secret Life of Abuse chronicles the life of Nesa Chappelle, Ph.D., who experienced abuse, beginning in childhood, from people in her life who were supposed to love her, including her mother, her stepfather, and her husbands. Her mother and father were never married. Her mother, who was cold and distant toward Nesa, suffered physical abuse from her husband. Other female relatives suffered physical and/or emotional abuse from the men in their lives. Nesa's father, a hustler, enjoyed the good life - fancy cars, fine clothes, and pretty women - but he emotionally abused those women. Growing up in this life not only triggered her quest as a young adult for "a good husband," but also instilled in her a thirst for knowledge and success. Nesa wanted the good life, so she pursued education - a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and a Ph.D. - which enabled her to land well-paying professional positions and to live an upper-middle-class lifestyle. To her colleagues, she had it all. Only a few close friends and relatives knew about her secret life: A pattern of entering into relationships and marriages to men who abused her mentally, physically, and/or emotionally. After enduring nearly two years of mental and emotional abuse in her marriage to husband number six, her life turned a corner. Nesa found God, sought domestic abuse counseling, and decided to write this book. The healing has begun. About the Author Nesa Chappelle, Ph.D., is a feminist scholar who is dedicated to influencing social and political policy that affects black and Hispanic women and victims of domestic violence. Chappelle holds a bachelor's degree in Spanish language and business education from the University of the District of Columbia, a master's degree in multicultural education from George Mason University, and a doctoral degree in political science, public administration, and education administration and supervision from Howard University. Broken Silence brings together for the first time many of Japan's leading feminists, women who have been bucking the social mores of a patriarchal society for years but who remain virtually unknown outside Japan. While Japan is often thought to be without a significant feminist presence, these interviews and essays reveal a vital community of women fighting for social change. Sandra Buckley's dialogues with poets, journalists, teachers, activists, and businesswomen exemplify the diversity of Japanese feminism: we meet Kanazumi Fumiko, a lawyer who assists women in a legal system that has long discriminated against them; Kora Rumiko, a poet who reclaims and redefines language to convey her experiences as a woman; Nakanishi Toyoko, founder of the Japanese Women's Bookstore; and Ueno Chizuko, a professor who has tackled such issues as pornography and abortion reform both in and out of the academy. These women speak to a host of issues—the politics of language, the treatment of women in medicine and law, the deeply entrenched role of women as mothers and caregivers, the future of feminism in Japan, and the relationship between Japanese feminists and "western" feminisms. Broken Silence will do much to dispel Western stereotypes about Japanese women and challenge North American attitudes about feminism abroad. With a timeline, glossary, and comprehensive list of feminist organizations, this is a long overdue collection sure to inform and excite all those interested in feminism and Japan.

This book addresses the interlocking systems of race and gender in institutions of higher education in America. The study is based on empirical data from African American women of various disciplines in faculty and administrative positions at traditionally white colleges and universities. It focuses primarily on narratives of the women in terms of how they are affected by racism, as well as sexism as they perform their duties in their academic environments. The findings suggest that a common thread exists relative to the experiences of the women. The book challenges and dispels the myth that Black progress has led to equality for African American women in the academy. The results of this study make it even more critical that the voices of African American women be heard and their experiences in the academy be expressed. This may be one way to inform academic and lay readers that racism and sexism are not dead.

For too many years, African American women have suffered in silence under the dual oppressions of racism and sexism. Expected to care for others before they care for themselves, forced to deal alone with emotional and physical abuse, black women have turned stress and rage inward--with devastating consequences. But life doesn't have to be this way. In "Broken Silence, renowned psychologist Dr. D. Kim Singleton, herself a black woman, shares the inspiring stories of eight African-American women who have healed themselves by opening their hearts and minds in therapy. Dr. Singleton traces the psychology of today's black women back to the days of slavery, when female slaves suffered abuse in silence--or died. Over the centuries, black women have learned to survive by adopting strategies like "keep your business to yourself" or "take your problems to the Lord," with the result that giving voice to their pain is often the hardest part of the process. For Amy, breaking the silence meant facing up to the sexual abuse she suffered from her father for years. For Ava, it meant admitting that she depended, emotionally and financially, on a husband who tried to kill her. For Kate, it meant acknowledging a pattern of surrendering her identity and self-esteem to the men whose love she wanted. For all of these women, and hundreds of others Dr. Singleton has helped over the years, entering therapy took courage they didn't know they had. But it has literally saved their lives. The stories gathered here read like novels about remarkable women struggling to overcome a legacy of suffering, loneliness, and deep humiliation. But "Broken Silence also provides clear advice and guidance that will helpall women deal with their most difficult life issues. Whether it's keeping a journal, turning to the Bible for solace and insight, or adopting new strategies for coping with the pressures of the work place, there are many practical ways to confront stress and build hope. Women, especially black women, need to know that they are not alone in their experience of abuse, failed relationships, and career disappointment. They need to see that personal change is possible, and that lasting change can come from breaking the silence in therapy. "Broken Silence is the book that will start the healing process and give women the power and clarity to live happy, effective lives.

Doug’s third book of poetry Broken Silence is his trilogy of poetry, in which he returns to his roots of what inspired him to write. This collection of poems focuses on romance, heartbreak, family, motivation and dealing with the struggles that a person may encounter in life. The poems convey his feelings about how important loved ones are with the dedication poem to his mother, First Lady. The poem In Memory of You, was written for his Grandmother he lost to cancer. Doug discusses the joys of love and finding that connection with a person in his heartfelt poems Notice You and Falling For You. He also addresses the pain of losing a relationship in his poems I Remember When and Off The Market, where sometimes putting your heart on the line does not guarantee,a person will end up with the result that was being sought out. In addition, his poem U.G.L.Y. inspires people that no matter what the opinion others may have of a person, there is strength to overcome any insecurity to find the path of secure inner happiness. The poem In My World addresses the struggles and pains that he views others dealing with in terms of unemployment and how it is affecting the world. Doug’s purpose in writing this book is to share his thoughts in a poetic form so others can see that no one is ever alone in feeling like the only outcast in the world. We are all unique in our own special way, and live every day as you are painting the world with your vision for everyone to see. Broken Silence will stimulate a person’s mind and show that most valuable things in life primarily come from within and understanding others.
